Areas of Practice

Equity & INCLUSION

Diversity refers both to the demographic presence of individuals from diverse backgrounds and, more broadly, to the wide variety of ways in which individuals and groups of people differ from one another. Inclusion results from practices and conditions that welcome diverse people and perspectives. GM Consulting helps clients advance excellence through supporting diversity and strengthening inclusion.

EFFECTIVE INTERACTIONS

Our programs and services put effective interactions at the heart of diversity and inclusion. Whether through leadership coaching, team-building programs, or multi-modal curricula, GM Consulting provides frameworks, tool kits, and real-world best practice models that foster effective interactions at and across every level of client organizations.

IMPLICIT BIAS

Our services acknowledge and examine the presence and impact of implicit/unconscious bias – both in day-to-day interactions and in the systems and structures that shape workplace and learning environments. We provide presentations on the current science and theory about implicit/unconscious bias, interactive workshops designed to foster self-awareness regarding bias, and coaching/training that equips individuals, teams, and organizations to recognize and address bias.

NON-DISCRIMINATION

GM Consulting frames non-discrimination efforts as working along a spectrum, from compliance with laws and policies to community building. We take the varied costs of discrimination seriously, with the goals of helping clients prevent unfair treatment from occurring and, when it does, preparing them to respond effectively.

RESEARCH

Sound data and analysis inform policies and programs that produce diversity and enable inclusion. GM Consulting provides expert best practice research, benchmarking analysis, and external review services.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY & AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

We approach EO/AA as legal, social justice, educational, and workplace fundamentals. GM Consulting services help clients advance diversity, pursue equity, and guard against bias in recruitment, hiring and promotion practices. Our EO/AA services provide the tools necessary to build and maintain inclusive work and learning environments.

Our Philosophy

The GM Consulting Practice Continuum:
From Legal Requirements to Beloved Community

In all of our areas of practice and services, our work focuses on equity and fairness, broadly, and, more specifically, on a range of particular issues and categories, including: race, ethnicity, sex/gender, gender identity and expression, class/socio-economic status, ability (including 504/ADA), national origin, and other significant aspects of individual and cultural identity. We honor a continuum of diversity and inclusion approaches, from legal requirements to "beloved community." The phrase "beloved community" — coined by philosopher Josiah Royce and popularized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — signals reconciliation and being in right relationship. While understanding of and compliance with laws and policies are essential, ideally our work seeks to go beyond these requirements to foster respectful interactions and engaged citizenship.
